Welcome

Hi everyone, the intent of this wiki is to compile a central list of current initiatives (and eventually "best practices") involving social media engagement by governments around the world. These can be internal or external, marketing, HR or IT, it doesn't matter. I even added a special "unofficial" category at the bottom of each page for all side initiatives. Let's see what we can come up with. Please keep your entries very high level and only fill out what you know. If you don't know the answer to one of the fields, leave it blank. If you see an error, please fix it! Should you have any questions or suggestions for improvement please email me here: mikekujawski(at)cepsm(dot)ca Good luck! - Mike Kujawski.

Hey Mike, how come aren't we able to see the full table? Thanks!

Is that DFAIT wiki external? Link please!

Melanie, the only thing that I can think of is that your sidebar needs to be collapsed (press the little arrow). If your screen resolution is under 1024x768 then this is likely the problem. Please let me know if you still can't resolve this issue.

Peter, I think it's internal, although I'm not the one that added it.

Thank you for your answer Mike, but my screen resoultion is actually correct. I might be innocent, but the problem seems to be the sidemenu that overlap, and which I can't "minimize".

Melanie, if you follow the top title bar (where the buttons "view" and "edit" are) all the way to the right, there should be a little arrow. This allows you to hide the sidemenu.

In case someone else is facing the same issue, please note that there were actually no arrow showing, but I just clicked on the end of the blue bar/tab and it worked! Thank you for your advice Mike.

Melanie - I also had the same issue and followed your advice. Problem resolved. It may have something to do with our old software (at least mine is!).

Been thinking about the Twitter "Following" feature as I develop a Social Media Strategy for my initiative. I was initially going to sidestep this feature and not use it. It may be neat and useful for GOC initiatives to use the follow feature to create a network of the fed resources that use Twitter. It woud be a way to highlight each other and help users tap into the network of GOC Twitter resources.

Great idea, definitely worth a try!

Benoit, if you are thinking about Twitter for GoC, do you think Yammer? It has the advantage of a closed system - only people within the email domain can belong. What do you think?

Would be nice to have a directory of Canadian Government Twitterers akin to http://newthinking.bearingpoint.com/2008/11/20/govtwit-directory/ in the US

Mark, I've been meaning to do that for a while now! I will create a separate section for people to input their Twitter user names

Where would I enter the social media projects of international associations made up of Government agencies such as the North American Securities Administrators Association who's membership is comprised of Provincial and State securities regulators?

Has anyone sent a message to their employees about the implications of Facebook? I have been asked to prepare a communication to send via email to gov't employees; discussing how their personal accounts can have implications on their professional lives etc.
Has anyone drafted something similar?

What happened to the "provincial" and "municipal" sections? I am going to have to revert back to an older version....

If you have added something and see it missing...please add it again

Mike Kujawski said

Lia, I would stay away from mentioning a specific tool (i.e. Facebook) and focus more so on the concept of online privacy. Don't simply send a "fear-inducing" email but rather re-enforce the concept of "thinking 3 times" before posting something online...anywhere...not just Facebook.

Does anyone have an issue with splitting up the pages into country-specific? This page is currently way too long for people to browse through.

Mike Kujawski said

Thanks for tackling the page scrolling issue Michael! Much better now.

Mike Kujawski said

Can somebody please add back the link menu on the Canadian page (Federal, Provincial, Municipal, etc..) so that users don't have to scroll down?

Peter Henderson said

Mike, what's the story on official languages policy for Canadian government Web 2.0 initiatives? I've heard that we can post in one language as long as we respond to users in whichever one they choose - is this correct? Is there a pre-existing policy guideline?

Michael Harris said

Issue with page TOC to remove the need to scroll sections fixed. More information on how to do this: http://usermanual.pbworks.com/TOC

Mike Kujawski said

Hey Peter, that is the general direction departments are going in. No official policy will be coming out. Treat social media as a "conversation" platform. Same rules apply as the ones stated in your values and ethics code as an employee.

Warning, spammers have been at work on the wiki recently. Can everyone please be more vigilant for this and remove any suspicious activity promptly.

I didn't see any Web 2.0 initiatives listed for Indian Affairs & Northern Dev (Canada) -- Nick?

As a lame attempt to warn the spammers, have just added an important notice to the footer of mainpage to at least provide some warning that spamming activities will be treated with extreme predjuice.
